A FEW HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT CAMP MEADE *
The site for the camp was selected over other sites because of the
advantages offered by the railroads and the ability to contract for the
construction of the camp.
In 1917, the landowners were "requested" to turn over their land
and were cautioned that to protest would be unpatriotic.
Construction of the camp began July 2, 1917. Within five-and-a-half
months, 1,460 buildings had been erected at a cost of $15,600,000.00
The camp was designated as the organization and training center
for the 79th Division of the National Army.
The formal opening of the Camp was in September 1917.
