A FEW HISTORICAL FACTS ABOUT CAMP MEADE *

• The site for the camp was selected over other sites because of the
advantages offered by the railroads and the ability to contract for the
construction of the camp.

• In 1917, the landowners were "requested" to turn over their land
and were cautioned that to protest would be unpatriotic.

• Construction of the camp began July 2, 1917. Within five-and-a-half
months, 1,460 buildings had been erected at a cost of $15,600,000.00

• The camp was designated as the organization and training center
for the 79th Division of the National Army.

• The formal opening of the Camp was in September 1917.
