OHS February 2023 Open House

February 5, 2023 |1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

On Sunday, February 5, the Odenton Heritage Society will celebrate Black History Month with a display about Sappington School, which welcomed Black grade school pupils during segregation from the early 1920s to the late 1940s. Local support made possible Odenton’s first educational facility for African Americans. When Anne Arundel County constructed a large, replacement school for white children in 1921, Macedonia Methodist Church, an African American congregation, obtained a small, surplus building at Camp Meade and moved it to the church grounds so that Black children could receive a comparable education, though not in an equal facility. Featuring photographs of pupils and African American teachers, the display documents Sappington School through 1949, when a modern consolidated school several miles away replaced Sappington and other small, local schools in use by area Black children. The display also includes Sappington School’s later use as a church social hall and its demolition in the 1970s.

Hours are from 1PM to 4PM, and tours and admission to the display and OHS museum is free.
While you’re visiting, please consider becoming a member or making a donation. Your support to our all volunteer organization is what helps keep the OHS going, continuing to ensure the history of Odenton is preserved and promoted.
