Underground Odenton: The World Beneath Your Feet
A photographic display highlights how Odenton’s location within the Severn and Patuxent River watersheds shaped the town’s growth. Discover how 18th-century roads—still in use today—were laid along the high ground between the two watersheds. Learn about underground natural features such as Picture Spring and streams that flow from a single hill to tributaries of the Severn and Patuxent. Learn how the water supply powered Odenton’s grist mills, sawmills, steam locomotives, and hydraulic presses, driving the town’s industry and transportation. Examine century-old tree trunks that continue to support historic buildings as floor joists, and take a glimpse into Cold War–era fallout shelters.
Immerse yourself in other displays on the Civil War, railroad history, and local businesses, including guided tours with costumed docents!
As always, admission to our historical center and museum, including tours, is free. Please consider becoming a member or making a donation to support our all-volunteer organization in preserving the history of Odenton.
